I’m going to the final day of The Open. I’ve a flight to catch at 10pm from Edinburgh on Sunday night. Train travel seems to be easiest from Carnoustie to Edinburgh but concerned that trains will be overwhelmed by the crowds and will be difficult to get back. Anyone got ideas?

The trains are very well organised for The Open – regular buses run from the course to the station and the trains set up to deal with the expected numbers. I’ve been to a few Opens both by car and train and the train is much better. Carnoustie is a small place and it’s roads are not designed to deal with the volume of traffic there is on the final day (or any other for that matter) – sometimes it can take over an hour just to get out of the carparks especially if it is a close finish with most spectators wanting to stay till the end.
Take the train! Or, make friends with one of the top players and get a ride in their personal helicopter!

I was at the last Open at Carnoustie and would definately recommend train.

The station is less than 200 metres from the Entrance and trains are extremely regular, large and well organised.

There is little parking for cars around the course (unless you’re a VIP) and costs can be between £10 – £40 per day.

Plus!! The train track runs along side the course so you can see a few of the more distant holes along the way.

Take the train, car parking is a nightmare.
