do you need a passport to travel from uk to ireland?

my boyfriend and his friend want to drive and catch ferry from uk to republic of ireland , he doesnt have a passport, does he need one or can is it not needed to travel to ireland?
he wont be the driver but he has a provisional licence, any good?

Not needed.He’ll have his licence with him for I.D. purposes anyway,so he’s sorted.

If he is British or Irish then he doesn’t need a passport but he will need his photo ID driving licence. All other nationalities must have a passport.

For the ferry no, just regular id.

Is your boyfriend aware of the regulations of his country? Since the dawn of time, there has never been a requirement to produce photo identification when travelling between the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
The airlines don’t even seek photo I.D. between the two countries.
The ferry to Ireland does not require any form of identification – fact.

I have no experience of the ferry sorry. As for airports…Oooh why am i not so convinced …oh yea it’s because they ask you for your id about twenty times in heathrow when you are entering dublin thats why. I’m not sure if it’s passport they want though but god they don’t have give you the flippin runaround i think i’ll just selloptape my passport to my chest in future save me taking it in and out of my bag TWENTY BLEEDIN TIMES waaaaaaaaa
